We Caught A Whopper!

When an energetic discussion on society and politics can handle the “big” question of the cost of our having a heritage of “Founding Fathers but no Founding Mothers,” you know you’re getting close to some of the “real deal” problems in today’s American culture.

(This point thanks to Jack.)

Soon after, if you get into the role of love (agape = unconditional people love) or the lack thereof in our enormous cache of cultural problems (thanks to Mike), then you know you might be talking a bit about solutions rather than merely complaining about problems.

This is what you get to hear if you listen to the podcast of our lively exchange of thoughts and ideas on yesterday’s Possible Society In Motion Radio Show with G.M. (Mike) Corrigan as our featured guest.

To take the theme of “100 Ways To Sunday: or how to become…a possible society in motion rather than a troubled one!” to even more enticing heights, on our extended conference call portion, one participant, a woman of course, brought up the idea of sending a thousand mothers rather than the National Guard to our child-immigrant threatened borders.

What a whopper of catch all this made of yesterday’s special program!

P.S. No more shows now for two weeks. Anastasia leaving for vacation.

Father Hoda Speaks Again

Father Hoda
The priest paused, momentarily regarding her. “Yes, exactly, dear.  “The modern tendency not to engage the other, but to avoid or exploit our neighbor—and thus avoid love. …… It’s a grave problem.”

This Week: Two Wonderful Possible Society In Motion Radio Shows

Thursday, July 24, 2014 6:30 p.m.
 on

With Anastasia Rosen-Jones and Jack Slattery

In this episode Anastasia and Jack explore the other side of "leaning in," the disconnected self, its roots and its consequences in modern America. For this evening’s program a particularly relevant article, “Alienation Under Capitalism” by Erich Fromm is used as a discussion launching point.

Jack, reliably, adds his astute perspectives to analyzing the implications of this piece from Erich Fromm. And, then joins with Anastasia to merge the overarching theme of the show; leaning in as antidote to the poisonof polarization, with the upcoming special program with guest, G.M. (Mike) Corrigan, investigative journalist and author.

For both shows:

The on-air, broadcast portion of the show is followed by a conference call forum discussion.  Guests are welcome to join in at: 712.432.0600, access code 640883 (also recorded).

If you miss the original conference call discussion, please contact New Horizons, the show's sponsoring organization, at: zonesofpeacenh@aol.com for access code for the conference call recording.

Father Hoda’s Message

“Suffering is the ice axe that breaks through the frozen sea inside." Father Hoda  Chasing Chickens by G.M. Corrigan
Father Hoda
My dear and admired friend, Mike Corrigan, writing under the name G.M. Corrigan, is a brilliant investigative journalist.  Jack and I have had him as a guest on our radio show two times with a third coming up on July 26. (See podcast links of earlier shows below.)

Mike has done an inspired writing job of translating his personal observations into a coherent social and political thesis, in not only one insightful, non-fiction treatise, Exposing America’s Secret Civil War, but also a rather spirited, tongue-in-cheek  fiction piece, Chasing Chickens: A Love Story.  (Hear the podcasts at the preceding links here. And, find out how to order Mike’s books and read his commentary here.)

What dedication and determination to help make our country a better one!

Last Sunday, Mike presented his viewpoints at an engaging discussion forum at a local coffeehouse at which I was in attendance.

Lo and behold all did not immediately go simply and smoothly.

Oops! No way!

A presentation and discussion on overcoming polarization quickly headed in the direction of being – what else??? -- fraught with potentially polarizing audience comments.

But – here’s the good news --- for which we can credit Father Hoda, Mike’s wise and loveable priest character from Chasing Chickens.

When someone in the audience (who just happened to be me) suggested that those present might be slipping into the pitfalls of intellectual debate, permitting the unacknowledged heart; the pain and suffering of our “dysfunctional” divisiveness (our social and political schisms) to drive us further apart, Father Hoda made a timely appearance and helped guide the discussion into smoother channels.

We could have stayed with the building tensions but each chose not to. So we managed to move forward with calm and respect for one another with an attentive ear turned toward Mike’s inspired thesis.

Thus a good time was had by all.

From snags to synergy by simply listening to the words of a wise and kindly priest!
(As we truly wish our President and Congress could manage.)

Father Hoda arrived at just the right moment to remind us that –
“Suffering is the ice axe that breaks through the frozen sea inside.”
Hear Jack and I discuss this lively forum that went quickly into a budding polarization – and – then equally as fast from snags to synergy.

Suffering And The Challenges (And Rewards) Of Leaning In

This Week: Thursday, July 10

With Anastasia Rosen-Jones and Jack Slattery

Thursday, July 10, 2014 6:30 p.m.

In this episode Anastasia picks up threads from the central story of the last program, “When Worlds Collide.”  In the scenario recounted in that show, what might have become a head-on collision between Jewish and Christian ideologies was averted through artful strategies and the intention of the involved parties to lean in toward one another.

Rather than polarize, a potentially highly-charged interpersonal snag became an opportunity for growth and greater understanding.

Jack adds his reliably astute perspectives to the mix along with afew of his own stories that reflect challenges and struggles that can lead – or not – to the kinds of successes, deriving from applying the principles of the “The Lean In Legacy Template.”

Again the on-air portion of this show continues with a conference call forum discussion.  Guests are welcome to join in at: 712.432.0600, access code 640883 (also recorded).
