If you’ve been following my blog articles for the past few months you can probably intuit, even if I did not come right out and say it, there has been so much chaos going on at and around New Horizons, that it’s hard to stay settled for long.

For example, take a look at my Beyond Gender Tyranny collection of articles on Anastasia The Storyteller. 

There you will read about the upheaval going on in my life, personally, due to an Ethics Complaint for sexual harassment and power abuse against one of my former clinical trainers.

Also, note that that circumstance, alone, has brought me to cut back my regular hours, by half, as Executive Director of New Horizons. If you can’t imagine it, let me tell you, a ship without a captain, or one who works only half-time, is not a great deal. The dearth of blog articles posted to this site for months, if you have noticed, will drive the point home of the upheaval with which we have been dealing.

Add to that, the general chaos in the world around us, political and #MeToo-oriented, for starters. Then count in, OMG, what else????

In the midst of this turmoil, yesterday, order followed disorder, if only for a short time, when, after months of struggling to get back on the air with New Horizons online radio shows: Anastasia The Storyteller and The Possible Society In Motion Radio, I had a breakthrough! 

To accomplish this, I had to practically slither into my Anastasia The Storyteller show studio to do the broadcast. 

However, all in all, the show didn’t come off too poorly, especially as the sound quality was fine most of the time, in spite of the fact that I had to manage losing my wireless connection, one time, to carry it off.

I’d like all of you to hear this show titled “Chaos Test” that I went through so much to present.

Maybe you could rate me, as to how I sounded on the air, doing almost every imaginable, behind-the-scenes gyration to come off, even mildly, with a few decent comments shared for the duration. 

We were certainly testing the chaos, doing this show, seeing if we could best and surmount it.

If you do listen, you will save me the toil and trouble of further explaining about the tech end of the chaos we’ve been encountering, at New Horizons, for months, trying to do what used to be simple; the broadcasting of a once a week online radio show.

Without doubt, we’ve had a hard time connecting with you, our radio show listeners, due to the CHAOS we’ve been experiencing on multiple levels. That’s why we titled this show “Chaos Test.”

Bottom Line: Yesterday, we were testing to see if we could go beyond the chaos of our radio show that we couldn’t actually air -- and -- defeat the obstacles our wireless service had placed in our way. 

And, we succeeded! 

On ground level, again and again, for going on five months, we have been attempting to transcend obstacles, brought about by a flood disaster in our locale. The flood catastrophe brought much upheaval to our generally serene mountain living, bringing us down in several MAJOR ways:

1. Our only direct connection to a main highway has been closed – and – may not yet re-open for months to come. OMG!! This will depend on how soon engineers and contractors of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Service can clear and make safe again an area that suffered a rock slide on to a connecting roadway; 
2. A T and T, our former cell provider had one of its towers downed in our area due to extremely heavy rains and flood conditions; and 
3. Finding us undeserving of improved cell service when they righted it, they redirected the repaired tower signal so far from our very sparsely populated expanse we had almost no signal at all.

So we’ve been challenged!

Nonetheless, pressing forward, I did accomplish a full broadcast show, yesterday, if only for a brief fifteen minutes!

Therefore ---- Steve and I hope to be back with you next week, anticipating a full run on both of our radio show programs, to help you, our listeners, find better and better ways to move Beyond Gender Tyranny.

#MeToo Poster People At New Horizons

Who would’ve thought it?

Not I!

That New Horizons very own Executive Director, that be ME, would have found herself, like countless others, embroiled in a #MeToo controversy!

And, then, lo and behold, not many months later, New Horizons Board Member, Steve, became entangled in one too!

Of course, now we know that #MeToo controversies have reached epidemic proportions. 

Few can escape!

However, allow me to come back, later, to Steve and myself, now becoming New Horizons’ #MeToo Poster People, by taking a look back at how we’ve moved from where we were last year at this time to where we are now. 

There we were, innocently, at New Horizons, around this time last year, trying our best to find a way through the chaos Donald Trump and Company had brought into our lives, getting himself elected to the highest office in the land.

For months we tried, again and again, to find new directions. 

What could we do that would align with our objectives of being agents of change to help keep our country, safe, secure and unified, within reason?

Nothing seemed to resonate with who we are and what we could contribute.

Yet, in ourselves and all around us, in our families, with friends, in our neighborhoods and local communities, throughout our nation, we saw relationships being torn apart. 

At New Horizons we were about building small “zones of peace.” We’d been doing this for decades. So we asked ourselves, “How can we help our local communities, and even our nation, regain its footing?

We were frightened, almost despairing. Still we believed that there must be something productive we could do.

Surely with all our many years of working to analyze and reverse the dynamics of
polarization in groups and organization, there must be some way we could assist.

Intent as we are, always, on building “zones of peace,” we were struggling, as were many, to find a viable pathway, post the 2016 presidential election, to a greater unity in our country and less divisiveness, for most of 2017.  Still we believed there must be some way to improve things as they were.

Then StoryCorps came to mind! 

On that breathtaking day of the solar eclipse, August 21, rising up from the debris in and around us, the idea of New Horizons partnering with StoryCorps rose up like a beacon.

“Aha,” we exclaimed!

“We can turn to storytelling, as a vehicle!”

 “That would, for sure, be in keeping with our overarching mission!”

We knew we could do this! We had been using storytelling as a community bridge-building exercise countless times in the past.

Now we could do it again! This time we would place storytelling on center stage, not only as a part of a larger program event.

From that day forward, New Horizons began to develop an updated template for building small “zones of peace.” We would enhance one of the most impactful parts of our Coffee House Conversations approach, storytelling, offering it as a means for overcoming the polarization infecting our communities, near and far, post-Election 2016.

With this in mind, New Horizons Board Member, Steve, and I set out to introduce a new series of online storytelling-centered radio shows on Anastasia The Storyteller Radio, focusing on this single aspect, storytelling, as we might derive its usefulness from our Coffee House Conversations model that we had been successfully cultivating for the past decade or so. 

We were excited to embark on this new direction, setting off on what we thought would be a new “zones of peace-building” track.

Listen to Steve and I, a month after coming up with our StoryCorps-partnering plan, unsuspecting of what would lay ahead, as we launch that online storytelling series program on podcast from September 24, 2017 here. Listen carefully and hear our energetic, yet naively, unsuspecting enthusiasm that was soon to show itself to be short-lived.

Unfortunately, our storytelling series plan, barely landed, as a tiny pebble in a huge pond, hardly making a ripple as it soon sunk into the depths. Nonetheless, over time, listener statistics for that podcast would show us that we were on the right track with our plan. Maybe even a head of time for how storytelling might, effectively, be utilized as a healing vehicle for overcoming social polarization.

However, little did we realize, on that day of our introducing our planned for storytelling series, that a torrent of societal chaos was brewing!

Just as Steve and I were unsuspectingly moving ourselves into our second broadcast for our new series, themed as interactive storytelling, both the “New York Times” and “The New Yorker Magazine” were in the process of toppling our lives and our radio show agenda, irretrievably turning the best of our intentions, upside down.

Interactive storytelling, the weaving together of storytelling with story listening,  would have little place, at least for the moment, in this new world order up ahead!

The new name of the game would be almost exclusively about women’s stories, specifically about sexual abuse and harassment and power domination by men.

Interactive storytelling as an agenda and a program theme would quickly become a major misnomer!

Oh my! Oh my!

Life in these United States was not about to be put back together again into well-oiled working parts, that might help keep our country, so recently torn apart, even more than previously, grow and flourish.  

No sirree! Our country was not on its way to a greater unity.

Not at all!

The largest possible area of division: that between men and women, had been buried – and would now be excavated in order that it might see the light of day and, hopefully, at last, a long overdue liberation. 

This is what would be going on, almost simultaneously, with our well-intended radio show broadcasts and their idealistic agenda.

Unity among U.S. citizens, as a goal, was about to be usurped while the fifty percent or so of half the population, the female half, began to take its first steps forward into a new freedom, a liberation so monumental that its impetus would soon move around the globe!

Personally, what was about to happen, once that the sordid tales of Harvey Weinstein’s corruption, with more of the same throughout Hollywood and beyond, were about to usher in a new era of feminine respect and dignity in our work and private lives in a fashion that would never again allow civilized women and men to return to the status quo that had been.

In the midst of these happenings, New Horizons would introduce its Beyond Gender Tyranny Initiative. And both Steve and Anastasia would address the impact of #MeToo in their personal lives.

We’ll be back with more articles on stories, as we at New Horizons, offer you our best tools and talents to help you Move Beyond Gender Tyranny, if you are so inclined.

How Do You Ensure That #MeToo Is Not A Faceless Movement?

The question is: 

“How do you ensure that ##MeToo is not a faceless movement?”

The answer is:

“You just keep talking.”

We've been doing a lot of talking behind the scenes this month, at New Horizons, on the chaos present in our own lives, the business of New Horizons and in the lives of others around us and the world, especially of the #Me-Too variety.

Who can escape it, when the subject gets involved all the way to the dealings of the Supreme Court?

In the midst of the chaos, with most, but not all of it,  #MeToo-related, the Board Members of our organization and myself have been taking a good, long hard look at where we’ve been recently.

Chaos abounds!

What are we to do with it all? 

Last month at this time we were preparing for a Volunteer Fair at nearby Hood College, well-aware that college student volunteers could be essential to helping us significantly move our Beyond Gender Tyranny mission forward, as stated below –

Our mission is to assist individuals and intimate partnerships, including families, as well as groups and organizations, small and large, such as in academia, the church or synagogue or workplace. Our endeavor is not only local, but intended to educate and guide people to move through the maze of present #MeToo dilemmas, throughout the world, through our online radio shows and associated courses and blogs. 

Our mission is to be, not only change agents for the dysfunctional and toxic systems that enable women (and men) to be harmed in environments that foster sexual harassment, abuse and power-over domination, but to also bring the countless faces of the faceless victims of this tyranny out of the shadows into the light where truth, healing and reconciliation can take place.

In the midst of good intentions and viable plans -- 

Chaos: The Volunteer Fair had very few attendees. So other than connecting with a few of the exhibitors, we walked away almost empty handed, except for a handful of pens from the display tables of those others, also sitting idly, as were we.

Searching For Solutions: We will, as soon as our other areas of upheaval settle down, look into alternative resources for student volunteers to assist with our presently identified needs. Putting that disappointment aside, we turned our attentions back to our Beyond Gender Tyranny Radio Series, set up for shows with two distinct angles –

Anastasia The Storyteller Radio -- for #MeToo-focused discussions on #MeToo issues and problem solving perspectives, interwoven with #MeToo-slanted current events;

The Possible Society In Motion Radio – Moving Beyond Gender Tyranny: The Online Course for – specific steps to take to move beyond gender tyranny traps, into the transforming of #MeToo problems to the good places between men and women for which most of us yearn.

Chaos: Our flood disaster of May has so severely disabled our connections to the internet we have needed to cancel one radio show after another, as our present internet connections will just simply not allow us to broadcast. 

Searching For Solutions: To find our way out of this disruption, we are working with our new cell provider, Verizons, almost daily, with hopes that by next week we will once again be able to broadcast, if only by relocating our studio.

Behind The Scenes At New Horizons

Every day, now, we are reviewing the pledge we made last year, shortly after the Harvey Weinstein/Hollywood scandals became big news – and -- after we had had enough time to catch a breath with all that was happening.

Most importantly, at New Horizons, we are talking among ourselves about how #MeToo issues have affected us or people close to us. Out of this we have become aware that that which we have the expertise and experience to provide for others is, now, also needed for ourselves.

We have been addressing the manifestations of #MeToo problems for more than forty-five years! 

Yet today, we are painfully aware that the insidiousness of #MeToo has infected each and every one of us on our board, either directly, as victims, or indirectly, as family members, friends or business associates of people who have been victimized. 

Thus it came to be that our long-in-the-planning stages Truth or Dare GAME, formerly the Discount Derby, New Horizons signature program, got off the ground, finally, last Saturday, with a focus, for now, on guiding New Horizons Board Members in Moving Beyond Gender Tyranny, as we have known it, personally.

Our Truth Or Dare GAME event for New Horizons Board Members was an oasis in a sea of chaos, last Saturday. 

Today, technology allowing, we will take another step of living out that charity begins at home, by having our first Truth or Dare GAME Support Group by conference call.

We intend to repeat the event on Saturday, October 27, limited, presently, only to New Horizons Board Members. But working toward opening our Truth Or Dare GAME doors to others, once we are able to get our own house cleaning done.

We know that #MeToo is not a faceless movement at New Horizons Support Network Inc. because we have seen the many faces of victimization, including our own when our New Horizons Board of Directors looks in the mirror!

We know the myriad dilemmas to be surmounted by the #MeToo Movement, from -- 

• Overcoming the denial and discounting of experiences;
• Overcoming the fear and shame of speaking out, truth to power;
• Learning to speak truth to power, effectively;
• Learning how to minimize backlash and carry your message, if you wish to create impact;
• Learning to sustain oneself, friends and families as each goes through the demanding transitions of giving up the secrets and living a new liberated way;
• Dealing with the resistances and rejections of others as one seeks liberation from a life built on hiding;
• The need for almost ceaseless support;
• And – much more!

Thus we are uniquely equipped to guide participants in navigating the turbulent waters of the stormy sea upon which we are currently sailing! 

We have been addressing the manifestations of #MeToo problems for more than forty-five years!

Wonder Where I/We Have Been For More Than A Month?

Sorry it’s been so long. But here I am now!

A handful of distracting situations kept me/us away.

All of them, almost monstrously BIG!

Here are some of them; an accounting now that we seem to be clearing the way to get back to normal, or some new normal still developing.

Number One: Recall we had a flood disaster up in our neck of the woods, including roads closed – and cell towers disabled. 

Both of these, general flood disaster and cell tower problems, plus the flood damage to our physical property, were enough to make life really difficult for close to two months or so.’’ Once the roads opened things starting improving.

But, guess what!!! The cell tower got redirected, leaving those of us in this very lightly populated, mountain area where we reside with almost no cell tower service, at all!

They can do that, you know!  And, too bad for you, if you are affected. Scary, too, like the time we were without electricity for eighteen hours and I had almost no phone service at all and the little I had was diminishing fast!

Few phone calls and no radio shows.  We could not get into our broadcast studio!

Very few blog postings (Take a quick look at how many for August, to date.) -- and a whole slew of other inconveniences that modern day people rely on, like sending and receiving emails so you can continue necessary contacts to make things, of one sort and another, move along fairly easily.

Now after almost four months of dealing with this interruption, I seem, as of last week, to be making some headway on cellular service, with Verizons, now, instead of A T and T who most uncaringly reduced my cell service, without an eye blink, of course!

Number Two: For me, personally, there has, also been, the getting used to cutting back my New Horizons hours, by fifty percent – and – refocusing my time management to allow for all my Ethics Complaint process has been and will continue to take from me on a daily basis, possibly for a year or more, it seems.

That whole deal is turning my life upside down. If I am able to even begin getting caught up on my minimum of four posts per month for this blog site, I may have more to say on the subject, soon, on my Anastasia The Storyteller blog site. 

In the meantime, suffice it to say my "World (has been) Turned Upside Down In The Process Of Making It Right Side Up!"

Number Three: If you have had opportunity to listen to the few radio shows we have been able to do (us, now being Steve, my new co-host and myself) you will know already that not only am I, now, dealing with a most unexpected #MeToo-type problem but so is Steve.

Number Four: OMG!! In the time I/we have been away, two other board members besides Steve and myself, also broke out with #MeToo-type problems.  

OMG!!!  This stuff is contagious! It now has hit four of our board members out of six!

Add that to the fact that one of our board members also lost her home to the California Carr Fire !!

OMG some more!!!

Of course, as a zones of peace-building organization, we’ve got to keep doing our charity at home, first, by taking care of one another through our trials and tribulations.

Believe me, all these happenings have been taking their toll in time, energy and sometimes emergency resources.  And this is only a brief summary of where we've been since our annual board meeting last month. Just imagine the details of living this stuff!

However, we are grateful for how our New Horizons Community Support Network (circa 1980) is pulling together and helping one another care for each other, these days.

We’ve had this bounty of community support for decades. However, our Beloved Community Development Mentor, Murat Yagan, strengthened our knowing that of all the essentials necessary for healthy growth, healing and transformation, a community of like-minded others is NUMBER ONE!  

Like-minded about what, you might ask? I’d say like-minded about whatever it is that allows people to work together for the good of the whole. Read through the postings on this site and you will find innumerable philosophical perspectives and applications for the like-mindedness shared by the New Horizons Support Network Board of Directors and our many followers of decades.

Number Five: Labor Day is on the horizon, signaling the beginning of our busy activities season through to next June.

So, we’ve been putting some of our “spare” time into Fall planning which is something I am looking forward to telling you about next. 

Our Fall plans begin at our baseline, our Beyond Gender Tyranny Movement, Project and Programs. For this relatively new initiative, we are wanting to broadcast how well equipped we are to educate and guide our listeners, readers and program participants in “Moving Beyond Gender Tyranny.”

Since I’m, now, giving you a brief summary of where I/we have been, look forward to my next postings when I announce plans for where we are heading.

Whew!! I’m sure glad I was able to get this update posted for you. 

I’ve been missing writing my posts, so much, for old faithful readers and new ones. But all that has been happening seemed totally daunting to even begin telling.

Nonetheless, here it is, in brief. I did it! 

And I’m now glad to be back, with hopes I will be able to be regular from here on out. 

But who can tell, from day to day, what will happen next. 

My Ethics Complaint, all of its own, with its many highs and lows, keeps my life and me upside down!!
