New Horizons Pledges Development Of County-Wide Gender Gap Bridge-Building Support Network

The New Horizons Small “Zones Of Peace” Project, known throughout Frederick County for its Coffee House Conversations bridge-building efforts in the areas of race and citizen-police relations, has announced plans to update its former, decidedly impactful, city-wide support network approach.

From the mid-1980s into the early 21st century, New Horizons sponsored a full-fledged, highly successful, city- wide support network, addressing male female relationship problems. With ongoing support groups in Montgomery, Prince Georges and Frederick Counties and Northern Virginia, boosted by day-long educational seminars and monthly training, weekend retreats, the project became a mainstay for both men and women facing the kinds of gender imbalance presently filling our daily news cycles, prompted by sexual harassment and abuse scandals from Hollywood to New York City and all points between and beyond.

In response to this outpouring, the New Horizons Small “Zones of Peace” Project, headed by Executive Director and Founder, Anastasia Rosen-Jones, is now pledging to revitalize its support network model for Frederick County.  To this end, the organization will now seek: 1. Collaboration with other organizations, groups, agencies and individuals to help develop a Frederick County Male-Female Support Network; 2. Develop a feasibility study to chart out strategies for the project; and 3. Bring together the many voices of our community that have gender-based, power imbalance concerns.

Ms. Rosen-Jones, a retired psychotherapist with more than forty years of experience in the mental health field, suggests that these sexual harassment and abuse scandals now offer our community an occasion to raise the bar for male-female relationships in Frederick.  “Whatever is now falling out, locally, from the national tsunami of scandals and #Metoo repercussions, can become an opportunity in Frederick County,” Ms. Rosen-Jones stated. 

Ms. Rosen-Jones, who is also a member of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) workgroup, a project of the Frederick County Health Department’s Local Health Improvement Plan (LHIP)—an effort including, too, Frederick County United Way, the Frederick County Mental Health Association, and other local agencies and organizations—states: Frederick United Way, the Mental Health Association and other local agencies and organizations, states, 

“There is a strong correlation between what we do as ACE activists and what New Horizons is proposing here.  From recent trends revealed in the reporting of sex and power related problems in the workplace as well as elsewhere, the main victims appear to be women and mothers.  

With secrets buried deep within, victims, who may have never thought, previously, to seek help, find themselves rearing children, with the added burden of carrying unhealed trauma wounds that can impact their young ones. As our ACE task is to assist children – and – families who experience adverse conditions, we may find our community benefiting, if we offer support and guidance to adult survivors, both male and female, in some new ways beyond current provisions, outside of immediate domestic violence crises. This is what our support network will be designed to accomplish. ”

Can Storytelling Be A Vehicle For Resolving Social Problems?

I have already written, some, about the New Horizons Small “Zones of Peace” newly refined agenda to shift our attentions away from community dialogue, as we had been doing for years with our Coffee House Conversations programs, to an intention to focus more on one-on-one dialogue.

Using our partnering with Storycorps, as a backdrop, we have, now, beginning with our Storytelling Workshop Series, live and online, launched this new plan over the past month. 

Our introductory pathway was about strengthening bonds, designed primarily for our local community. Following up on the countless things we learned in the process of teaching skills to attendees, in our live workshop, we moved our storytelling project forward with a mission of utilizing storytelling as a viable vehicle for resolving many and varied social problems beyond that. 

We all have lots to learn ---
from one another.

As a result an overview of programs we are currently developing includes these items –

• Storytelling (along with an introductory Coffee House Conversation program) to soon be added to the list of activities at a seniors community;

• A pending project to bring our Storytelling Workshop Series, as a unifying activity, onto a local campus. 

On this item, ask yourselves –

Might we take up the gender gap with storytelling on college campuses?  We think we're gonna give it a try!

Might you, personally, like us to, also, bring this project to your college campus and help you begin setting up your own StoryCorps platform? 

Imagine what it might be like to have your college campus have its own StoryCorps archives, with your voices and stories, preserved for perpetuity!

• A storytelling project geared to drawing out stories of female, adult Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), specially designed to empower and support women with healing and integrating sexual harassment and abuse trauma experiences, some long hidden, from situations such as the Harvey Weinstein/Hollywood scandal has unloosed;

• A pending project for our local community to gather stories from our key leaders, political and otherwise;

• A project, now in motion, for me, personally, to collect stories from neighbors, living in the magical locale we share up in the mountains above Harpers Ferry.  (A great way, possibly, to pass through the cold winter weather that sometimes makes driving difficult up here and, maybe, walking a little less so.)

• A pending project to arrange one or two Storytelling Holiday Workshop Parties

Sounds like a great start, right?  

Especially for a building small “zones of peace” project officially, launched slightly only a month ago!

Each and every one of these projects has direct tie-ins to an intent to elevate some social difficulties out of the problem area into the possible. Such as bringing seniors, living in community with many new people they may never have known in their earlier years, to grow their new community bonds stronger.

New Horizons News Update!

Would you believe --- simply focusing on my "tranquility diet" has now gotten New Horizons to being in the planning stages with some awesome “coming attractions,” not by the urgency, trying hard and workaholism that often dominated my earlier days. Rather by creating day-to-day tranquility! I am getting to love it!

So, beginning yesterday, under the power of the Eclipse, New Horizons commenced to create a "storytelling" project to help our overall community building mission, via New Horizons-type programs, for next year. StoryCorps and possibly the Frederick County Public Library will be our initial partners (the latter item is still being discussed); this, in spite of the fact that I got stung by a hornet the hour leading up to the time to focus on that fast moving Eclipse. 

Oh my, having stepped on a hornet, was I ever in pain all through that time and well beyond until morning. 

Still, that Eclipse seems to have brought us, New Horizons and myself, new beginnings of a marvelous type. 

Why not? 

Yesterday was also the day of the New Moon!

In the meantime, as our more extended project develops, we are now amping up to develop an updated storytelling track, correlating with our Coffee House Conversations and Possible Society, Possible Human Study, our Counterculture Community Development and Making Violence Obsolete projects, all rolled into one, new updated effort.

So, we are feeling confident, thinking we are, now, beginning to find our new path, while trying to stay sane in this insane world. 

Although we don’t yet know quite how we will proceed, we do know that storytelling as a pathway to peace and the ideals of leaning in and dialogue rather than debate will be central tenets of whatever it is we are about to create. Collecting stories of people’s lives as they are, now, living through these turbulent times, in this momentous time in history, will also be a dominant theme.

Coffee House Conversations And The Joy Of Words That Connect Rather Than Divide

I am preparing to attend another “civil conversation” tomorrow evening. Having had the richly rewarding pleasure of such a conversation several weeks ago, hosted by my friend, Mike Corrigan, and more of the same at New Horizons Coffee House Conversation on “Overcoming The Polarization Of……Everything” last Saturday, I am feeling all about having more, more, more of people talking civilly to one another!  Can’t quite get my fill!
  
What a refreshing change from the daily fare of our society and politics, at war with itself from every angle. I can barely wait for this next, upcoming dinner event where people will readily conduct themselves in a manner that creates enriching discussion, almost totally devoid of polarization. So enticing that a person can truly digest both spoken words as well as the food.

I left New Horizons Coffee House Conversation of last week happily reminded of the kind of joy and inspiration that flows freely and builds to a higher elevation of consciousness when people truly are of a mind to dialogue, rather than debate.

We had a bit of a discussion at New Horizons’ event on the merits of dialogue up against those of debate. What emerged, as eye opening for me from that discussion, was that, inadvertently I was presenting myself as one who does not approve of debate at all! This is not so about me! 

So I was appreciative that our discussion environment was not judgmental of me in that  apparent inflexible position. Thus allowing me the space to self-correct and acknowledge that I enjoy being a listener to debate but not much in the way of being a participant.

I also got to clarify, as well as join in discussing, the merits of weighing different viewpoints and positions up against one another. Interestingly, but not surprising, the discussion participant most dedicated to debate was a lawyer. Figures, eh? And as she pointed out I am, by choice, training and experience -- as a psychotherapist --- a connector. That figures too, doesn’t it?

A beautiful passage I recently read by Natalie Goldberg in her book “Long Quiet Highway,” aptly described the joy and the wonder these recent non-divisive conversations held for me. It’s well worth the reflection, especially in this day and age where words and how they are being used are so often unrecognized for the gifts they are to humanity. Thus well worth respecting when they are used.

"What I adored….was the opportunity to talk, not just myself, but as a whole class, to have a discussion. Someone said something, another person disagreed or elaborated, and all our minds were free, thoughts were free and equal… You had a mind and you thought. You had a right to form the nebulous energy racing through you into words, to form those words with tongue, jaws, lips…..and suddenly sprung to life.... mind and feelings had a voice and ... spoke words into the empty space…” Long Quiet Highway by Natalie Goldberg

Yum. Love those words and love loving them!

Coffee House Conversation and The Finding Of Peace With Election 2016

It is Saturday and the New Horizons Coffee House Conversations Project is presenting i a discussion seminar on “Overcoming The Polarization Of ….. Everything.” Most of the regular participants of New Horizons Counterculture Community Development Experiment are present with me. 

After close to one year of being, working and growing together these dedicated people –are beginning to be able to welcome newcomers to our fold with ease; synergy would best describe how well we work together to present a discussion forum such as this. The sense of community unity we have is what we are after to achieve and that presence, in and of itself, is a fine start to our event.

For starters, after a few opening comments from me, the group of already active participants and newcomers begins to get to know one another and the wishes attendees have for coming together on this chilly Saturday afternoon.

Introducing themselves, people express distress about the current state of political and social conditions, on the heels of our 2016 presidential election. Yet, overall, we will spend our time skirting politics. Instead we will focus on personal reactions to what has occurred. And the effect the election fallout is having on close relationships.

To the person, each expresses a lack of ease with current circumstances, especially a disconnect with close family and friends over the election results. One woman poignantly voices the main thrust of hopes and desires; finding peace with the situation as it presently stands. After a few more introductory comments from me, suggesting the direction our program will take, attendees are willing to settle for improving communication skills with the hope that these may be able to increase their comfort, if only……, if only they can find ways to reach across current barriers.

So we begin. Dialogue versus debate as a practice takes center stage with people barely able to truly grasp the full significance of the exercise. But we make a start and everyone manages a respectable effort. By the end of our forum we have found an ease with one another that we may not readily find outside our meeting room, especially as most people say that these days it is even hard to acknowledge for whom you voted in the election without fear of stirring an upset.

I get high marks for content and presentation and feel gratified that New Horizons and myself have made a start going in the best post-election direction we can find; teaching the art of leaning in and, apparently, creating a safe, caring space within which others can make a beginning in that noble, often challenging, direction – leaning in.

I return home that night, get a good night’s sleep, waking to the joy of a sunshiny morning in the fresh mountain air. For my efforts of yesterday and all the pre-planning it took, I find myself, at last, feeling at peace with the election outcome and as at ease as I can be with the new administration under a president that I firmly believe "acts crazy" in my estimation regardless of what the psych tests might reveal.

I don’t like so many things now going on in our society and politics. I know I will remain cautious and vigilant for the coming term. And I don’t like that either.

I am tired of the shenanigans of both Republicans and Democrats but I’ll be darned if I will give up my faith in the Constitution of the United States and the American people and how these have successfully, until now, guided us to set our country aright in times it gets off. Barbra Streisand’s approach of blaming Donald Trump for her weight gain is far and away distasteful to me as an option for how to live my life under Trump or anyone else for that matter.

As one of my old friends once said, "I am not about to allow politics to hijack my serenity!"

I voted for Hillary but sure didn’t want Bill back in the White House. I wasn’t too crazy about her either. They were just familiar and might not have been better at all to help get this country where it needs to go.

Next month New Horizons and myself will put on another ‘Overcoming The Polarization of ….. Everything’ seminar, on April 1st. Our topic will be “Making Friends With The Enemy.”

I hope folks will join us as we get better and better, ourselves, and teach others the art of  “leaning in” in times of peace and in times of crisis in the U.S.A.

I think the magic lies in if we just keep talking as our friend Pastor George Earle, Jr. told us to do when we "saved Centennial."

After all, think about it; our First Amendment grants  us the freedom of speech. So if we are protesting, writing, teaching, lecturing as I am doing, meeting with others for dialogue as we did on Saturday, investigating and reporting as the media is doing, even arguing as lots of folks are now doing over social and poltical issues, we are exercising this freedom. This simple, yet not so easy track has brought us to where we are now, without too much bloodshed. That in itself is the stuff of miracles.

If you do that with enough people who share common concerns, solutions will emerge!

We did it at Centennial, help to build a bright, new future when great loss was at hand. Let's do it again now when humane treatment for all is at stake!

New Horizons’ Making Violence Obsolete Movement (MVO): A What-To-Do-After-The-March Opportunity

What to do? What to do?

The polarization of our society and politics, with Donald Trump as our king pin, looks pretty dire. And, it seems this is the state of affairs we are destined to be stuck with for some time into the future.

What to do? What to do?

For the past decade, beginning with New Horizons facilitating the healing of a local Jewish/Muslim controversy (2006), we have been front runners at helping communities to overcome polarization. And, instead build bridges of enhanced unity.

Obviously, we have a long road ahead if we aspire to even make a dent in our present state of society and politics. Yet growing numbers of people, throughout our country as well as around the world, as the Women’s March demonstrated on Saturday, are becoming increasingly vocal about the need for unity, as opposed to divisiveness, as it stands now.

At New Horizons, we are striving for a shared “awe” as we have actually been doing for more than forty years!

We know that our goal – “awe” – is achievable! But it takes determination, disciplined efforts by many individuals, groups and small communities to even get the undertaking off the ground, moving in the proper direction --- and sustained.

6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

The New Horizons Small “Zones of Peace” Project, led by Anastasia Rosen-Jones and Sue deVeer, will facilitate a table talk discussion on “Creating Non-Violent Communication,” focusing on the skills of “Dialogue versus Debate.”

Other topics will be discussed along with a grand annual opportunity for an evening of community building.
