News Update: Flood Disaster Challenges At New Horizons Harpers Ferry Retreat Center

Wondering where we’ve been for the last few weeks, with an absence of blog posts and Anastasia The Storyteller Radio Shows rescheduled twice?

The letter below, sent to Hannah Cobb, Chairperson of the Community Outreach work group of the Frederick County ACE Project (ACE = Adverse Childhood Experiences), that is close to the very heart of what New Horizons Small “Zones of Peace” Project stands
for, will give you an update of our flood disaster situation out here with more to follow as our recovery projects develop.

Hannah,

I am deeply disappointed to tell you that it seems I will not be attending meetings or participating otherwise, on behalf of the New Horizons Small “Zones of Peace” Project, with the ACE project for the coming months.

The New Horizons Harpers' Ferry Retreat Center where I work and live is now cut off from access to our main roadway, Route 340, due to the recent flood disaster and a rock slide off of Maryland Heights, just above the C and O Canal which is also blocking our roadway.

We are, also, dealing with flood recovery work here on our land.

So please send us back your best wishes for our renewal as we begin rebuilding our entire meeting and guest area which is likely to take us the bulk of the year ahead.

Anticipated repairs for our roads and the National Park Service work on the rock slide portion are estimated to be as long as one year, making easy access to Frederick from where we are located a prohibitive endeavor for the foreseeable future.

I will continue sending all my best wishes to all of you and our beloved ACE project and be in touch when I can once again resume participation.

Best of luck with our beautiful, collective endeavors to overturn the ACE epidemic, as it affects our local counties.

Anastasia Rosen-Jones
Executive Director

Truly Beaut-i-full And Impactful!

The agenda for last Saturday’s “community gathering” was to introduce New Horizons’ new project, the “Counterculture Community Development Experiment” to participants and the “Principles” that will foster its success.

With just that one day at hand to try out the template now being designed for the project by our board of directors, having “Making Violence Obsolete” as its centerfold, and only a small core group of participants for this initial run through, the impact of what we accomplished in just a few hours still left no doubt in my mind that we have now made a beautiful and impactful beginning.
Bravo! And congratulations to “US” for the take off of this exciting next project.

A “beautiful” set of Power Point slide handouts -- (if I do say so myself as I am the one that created them) -- provided participants with a well-delineated  overview of what we are intent on bringing into widespread application -- a movement perhaps might even emerge from our intention; doing our part to help “make violence obsolete,” G-d willing and the creek don’t rise. These prompted enthusiastic discussion and lively interactions to drive home our objectives.

The most prominent aspect of our conversations, from my perspective, was the indepth consideration of how exactly -- as Margaret Mead suggested -- “a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world” (i.e. in New Horizons lingo, “make violence obsolete.”).

I believe most of those present were contemplating the answer to that question I was certain, at least as much as basic formulae go and their applications, I had been learning how to achieve, if only, for more than forty years already; by living "it" not merely thinking about it.

And, of course, there was also the potluck and the camaraderie of hangin’ out on one of our last nice, but a bit warmer than we like, end of August days.

A significant part of the answer I am inclined to stress is -- very slowly and step-by-step!   As evidenced by the “takeaways” participants identified as their next action steps in line with our stated agenda, I could see they were already begin to consider that direction too; the pathway to awe -- and -- possibly grant me the privelege of being their guide.

Long time coming!

The single most agreed upon, by a good portion of the group, of the various angles presented tat day was to devote serious, personal attention to altering the following, day-to-day characteristics of polarization in themselves.
  • Emotional barriers;
  • Defensiveness;
  • Communication breakdown;
  • Seeing the “other” as an enemy;
  • Fear, anger, blame, criticism, power struggles;
  • Conflict, withdrawal, avoidance, collusion, secrets, aggression, bullying and violence.
Nary a participant could attest to being free of each and everyone of these.  So they pledged to begin there.

How about you?  What are your next steps to help "make violence obsolete"?

An Invitation and A Request

Conversations In Kind Gifts Request -- And -- an invitation for hangin’ out and community building to our Frederick Coffee House Conversations On Race Relations Supporters/Participants.

Did you know you can contribute In Kind Gifts To Our Harpers Ferry Retreat Center Remodeling Project?

It’s a real win-win deal. (See the bottom of this page for what we need.)

Your In Kind Gifts are fully tax deductible!

And you can bring them with you to Dublin Roasters when you join us for our next event –

Kids and Kops In Conversation, May 16th

About Our Request

Here is the story

On this bright and beautiful day with the sun shining and the weather warmed up a good bit we, at New Horizons, are turning our thoughts to the coming months ahead. Springtime will do that for us out here in the mountains.  And, likely for you, too, wherever you are.

T0day the birds that visit the feeder outside my office window are not only hungry but cheerful, chirping happily away.  On occasion even their babies are now flying in. So it is that Sue deVeer, who is Chairperson of the remodeling project at our Harpers Ferry Retreat Center, and myself are busily preparing for our spring and summer projects. Winter, as usual was much too long so we are now trying to catch up on its limitations.

This year we hope to make enough progress to share the abundance we have out here. “God willing and the creek don’t rise,” by summertime we anticipate welcoming the many friends we have made recently through our Coffee House Conversations on Race Relations in Frederick for some informal, but grand times out here on sunshine filled days and clear summer evenings.

Campfire conversations and potluck dinners after a day of community connecting and shared work projects have always turned out to be among the best of times for us at our retreat center.  They bring us a sense of community that is hard to beat!

In the meantime, while we are getting back to our clean up,fix up, paint up chores on our mountainside property – and – doing our last two Coffee House Conversations on Race Relations (Saturday, May 16 and Saturday, June 20) in Frederick, we would very much like it if you would take time to consider supporting our work out here.

Our Harpers Ferry Retreat Center remodeling project would definitely appreciate your In Kind Gifts to help our remodeling efforts.  And, your time and talent to help us put things in motion.

To join in the progress, here is a partial list of what we need –

(Of course we always need more so if you have trash that might be our treasure, please talk to Sue about it. Her cell number is 240.367.4403.)

Volunteers – Do please make yourself a part of our community-building and remodeling projects.

Come share the richness of our land. Make yourself at home. You can talk and talk and talk almost as long as you like. And, hang out -- and do volunteer work with Anastasia who lives on our property. Many daytime opportunities can be arranged. All that is asked is that you bring your own lunch or dinner or food to share. Please call Anastasia at 240.409.5347.

Our Harpers Ferry Retreat Center was purchased by a group of investors on our behalf for the main purpose of being a training center as well as a place for community gatherings. We want to share it with you. So please consider it as a place to visit on a nice spring or summer day. Come and hang out for some wonderful informal conversing, always about building bridges of connection and aiming higher and higher for being our best and doing our best;

Sue comes out, generally, every other Tuesday to work on the property. So that is always an extra fun day to connect with both Sue and Anastasia. Work, play, eat (bring a bag lunch), talk, hang out, dream, enjoy summer in the mountains at New Horizons Harpers Ferry Retreat Center -- and -- grow community good will.

Do please join us for Summer In The Mountains, 2015!

In Kind Gift Donations that we need –
  • Leaf rakes;
  • Chain saw;
  • Gas powered lawn mower;
  • Lilies for planting;

Turning the ideal into the real

Chopping wood, shoveling snow: high ideals and practical applications

Last Sunday was a beautiful day out here in the mountains where New Horizons is slowly but surely revitalizing its training and retreat center. Our concern that day was, however, not much about the ideal. Rather it was the ordinary demanding  our attention. We had only two sticks of wood left from our former abundant supply, courtesy of Bobby Lowery, sawmill owner. And, a severe snowstorm with another period of freezing temperatures was on its way.

Saturday night I looked at the dwindling remnants of firewood, knowing that wood gathering was top priority. OMG! On the one hand, we might be just fine. And, on the other we might be at risk; without electricity etc. for days. You just never know how things will fall out here, especially in these days of extreme weather conditions.

We had a good plan, however, based, for sure, on the principle of “leaning in.” By early afternoon we were well on our way; “doing” that which New Horizons represents; not merely talking community-unity, but doing and being it.

The trio at hand-- Sue, chairperson of our remodeling committee with her truck, Chris, our handy man with his heavy-duty chainsaw, and me, the best-intentioned gofer when it comes to practical endeavors such as wood gathering -- was well-aligned with our intentions to care for our small zone of peace; first things first; high ideals -- and -- practical applications.

(I can, still, barely change a light bulb. So you know success, other than organizing projects and bringing people together would, for sure, not rest on me. It takes a village, even a teeny, tiny one, right?)

Long story short: Off we went to the wooded areas of our retreat center property to assure winter storm survival out here.

Within a brief few hours, we had cut (that’s Chris), gathered, hauled, loaded and unloaded the truck (Chris, Sue and I) and stacked enough wood, two and one-half truckloads, indoors to last for a time. We would definitely make it through the cold, snowy days to come; all done with optimum, harmonious pulling together. Synergy, ummm, good!

Laughing and refreshed by the rare, above fifty degree weather and sunshine, Sue marveled at how well we had all worked together.

I tell you this story to bring home one important, but relatively small point:

High ideals and practical applications are what is behind New Horizons’ devotion to Murat Yagan and the prototypical Kebzeh community he built around him in Vernon, B.C.. Synergy, ummm, good!

Working well together, that’s how we all should/could be; "one for all and all for one"; averting crises. Certainly not passively allowing them to infiltrate our lives or, worse, propagating and perpetuating them.

New Horizons, unlike those who have, for many years, lived near Murat as have his students in Vernon, B.C., is not a spiritually-based community development effort.  No, indeed!

Humane and ethical principles, spiritual or not, are not dependent, however, upon one like-minded ideology as practiced by those in Vernon in their very exceptional community. The community traditions of ancient Abkhazia, as Murat has passed them on, can be interpreted and applied to all kinds and colors of people – and – collective endeavors. Any community, group or organization that wishes to and puts forth the effort, as New Horizons has done, can develop, over time, into an exceptional community.

New Horizons, as it is today, teaches community development skills and mentors individuals, groups, organizations and small communities to overcome polarization. Our methodology; much of it derived from Murat (and my earlier mentor, Martin G. Groder, M.D.), thus, helps  people develop into exceptional community participants. Be they leaders or followers.

Teaching people the fine art of building bridges across the rivers of diversity that separate us from one another in modern, mainstream America is our aim.  If this is what you are after, you learn to keep whatever has the potential to divide to the side and go for the common ground at its highest. Be it spiritual, cultural, gender-based and/or political.

Thus, last Sunday, one hard-core hermit, Chris, one former anti-Semitic, recovering Jewish American princess (me) and dear Quaker Sue, had a grand time working happily together to assure warmth for a possibly endangered mountain side dwelling; the New Horizons training and retreat center.

As happy as the birds outside my window, now, feasting at the bird feeder, Sue and I put the show and tell steps of Murat’s Seven Ways to Knowledge aside and simply got into the doing, the feeling (oh so happy) and the being. Which is, of course, how real deal peace buddies do it!

The Lean In Legacy

Bravo!! Guess what????

Out of last month’s leaky roof and the vision, love, loyalty and stubbornness of board member and Remodeling Project Chairperson, Sue deVeer – it ain’t gonna leak no more.

Sue was gonna install that roof herself, if no other way showed up.

Look what her stubbornness hath brought instead.

Who knows the ways of Magic, Mystery, Fairy Dust and Love.

And, there was a chill in
the air as that roof went on.
The roof is almost done and it’s only Wednesday!!!

There will be no Roof Raising Community Building Event this coming Sunday!!

This week so far --
  • Monday, Allen Beckett, contractor, called Sue, taking the initiative to respond to our greatest hopes for a ROOF!
  • Tuesday, Allen sent us materials and a roofer that installed most of it.
  • Wednesday, Allen called/texted Sue. Sue called Anastasia and excitedly shared that most of the rest of the roofing will be completed on Thursday as per Allen, again, and his loyal and talented roofing team.
Now how did that happen? You tell me!

Much gratitude to Allen Beckett, contractor and his steady team of helpers.

And to Guy Burkett whose early generous donation to this project helped the dream start to become reality when it was only a wish!

More to come.

We came together

We came together last Saturday to celebrate the Summer Solstice and enumerable triumphs, both personal and collective, that New Horizons has attained. We were Intent on giving, from this bounty, all that we can that is the very best of ourselves, individually and together. And, I do believe we accomplished this mission.

Today and for a few days forward from now, I want to take time to discover for myself, integrate and prepare to share what this celebration meant for me, personally, and for those to whom it was offered, and for those who will benefit in the future that will grow out of the fruits of this labor.

For now my words are still within, unspoken as far as coherent communication is possible.

As a result, I contacted my radio show co-host, jack Slattery, following consultation with Sue, to reschedule tonight's show. I need to take the time I/we need so that we can present a radio program with some degree of conviction. I had intended for this show to derive from two important quotes; one by Margaret Mead and one by Mahatma Gandhi, as the jumping off point.

This is a complex endeavor, from my end, that will need tending to. Thus the show, titled "Never doubt that a small group..", will be broadcast on Thursday evening, June 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Please feel welcome to join us for our broadcast discussion for this show. And for the extended conference call-in discussion that follows. Here is the link for that program.

In the meantime the photograph posted here that was taken by me last night, just before sundown will, likely, speak words without words for those of you who gathered with me, from start to finish on Saturday.

Thank you so much. to those who were most involved in preparing for this celebration, Sue deVeer and Leslie Pickett -- and -- to those who attended, from start to finish. Not everyone did, herein lay the creative tension I was after in my design for the day.

 With gratitude and affection.

YES!

WE are getting it together on the ground level.

And, WE are heading for "awe." The formula almost always remains the same – find the elegant solution by –

1. Thinking outside the box;

2. Looking for win-win solutions;

3. Keep on keeping on, talking and listening;

4. Reminding yourself that you live in a world of abundance, not scarcity.

A most unexpected – and – appreciated consultation with a visiting “expert brought the magic of living in this attitude sphere home to me yesterday out here at our remodeling-in-progress retreat center in the mountains. We are not as far ahead on our projects as we would like to be. With this needed and that needed, etc. etc., it can get a bit overwhelming at times.

Now -- with the weather growing chillier day-by-day, I’ve been more than a bit concerned at times about my house-part of our retreat center. Given the sky high chimney repair estimate offered to get our wood burning stoves safely functioning, I have been doing my best lately to surrender to the notion that I might be living one step above camping out this winter; a tiny spec just above survival.

But -- just in the nick of time, “knight in shining armor,” Sue’s husband, Paul, a former plumber, arrived on the scene. With a gift of generously donating his time and talents to providing us with a detailed assessment of what needs to be done to winterize the dwelling that houses both me and our main meeting room out here.

Paul came bearing gifts of much needed advice on this, that and the other thing (i.e. particularly about plumbing and how to keep our water pipes warm and from bursting with our stoves (our main source of heat) not usable right now). For the far-reaches of my still recovering Jewish American Princess turned mountain woman mind, the whole of what he was suggesting was, indeed, quite daunting though his wisdom was scrumptious.

Yet, simply having Paul’s presence out here was a victory all by itself. Having spousal support for what one does is almost always a good thing don’tcha think? Particularly having man-type guidance for a remodeling project that some days relies soley on Sue’s hard work, commitment and knowledge and our shared “girly” tool box. At times, I am barely any help at all. However, I do own up to being able to make a hardy contribution with the chain saw when I’ve got a working stove that can burn the products of my labors.

Paul’s visit was truly a victory for our mission on so many levels. Most of all (not to minimize the expertise) his presence in being with us.

Thank you, Paul!

Thank you so much for your TIME and your TALENT. (And, couldn’t I please just make you a bowl of my grandmother’s special chicken soup recipe to show my appreciation – as well as my regrets for borrowing your wife at times you would really prefer her to be using her time otherwise.)

Another victory for my challenged, I can-barely-change-a-light bulb mind was the extensive blueprint Sue and I hammered out, co-creatively, on how best for us to proceed with our remodeling over the coming, possibly harsh months ahead.

The result of all this bounty -- I was delightfully surprised, after yesterday’s challenging, mind-stretching endeavors, I woke up happy and empowered; my house was bathed in toasty, warmth that yesterday I would not have known how to create on the limited resources with which we are presently operating.

Thanks to Paul’s guidance to make a few immediate changes and Sue’s hard work, generosity, wisdom and committment to furthering this project, we had – hopefully -- found some immediate, not- going-to-kill-us-with-the-electric-company "elegant solutions."

Still in all I would welcome a cozy, fireside chat out here as soon as possible.
