Why Play New Horizons Truth Or Dare GAME?

Over the past dozen years or so, New Horizons has endeavored to offer the best of ourselves through various initiatives, our first civic program being the "I've Got A Dream Conversations" project, preceded by our profound involvement in the Jewish-Muslim Controversy that brought us a highly regarded, regional reputation for aiding groups and organizations to overcome polarization on the local level.

All about "Think Global, Act Local!"

The initiatives we have promoted, often combined with embryonic plans for all-out-movements, have been –

• Coffee House Conversations;
• Overcoming Polarization;
• Exceptional Community; 
• Making Violence Obsolete;
• Beyond Gender Tyranny;

We have, additionally, taken extensive time and effort to gain a comprehensive understanding of what is needed most for our United States of America to be functioning at optimal levels. Our Possible Human, Possible Society Study has been our primary source for this. 

As an organization, New Horizons and I, as Founder and Executive Director, are most grateful for the kindness, support and information that given us, related to these efforts.

As each of these initiatives took form, we found ourselves making new friends and drawing encouragement from additional and varied sources, many of this coming through the key leadership of the nearby community in which we have, primarily, been involved, Frederick, Maryland. 

However, with all that we accomplished and the rewards gained, there was always something missing for me, personally, and the vision I held as Founder and Executive Director of New Horizons, a special touch that constantly left me yearning for a certain overlooked, key element or two, in the final analysis.

I had come from a clinical psychotherapy, private practice that had, over many years evolved into a therapeutic community outpatient treatment structure. 

I loved what I had created, under the guidance and supervision of my psychiatrist mentor, Martin G. Groder, M.D., that had been outstandingly impactful, well-received and applauded throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, especially the results that came out of our New Horizons GAME, originally called the Discount Derby – and – now, in its revitalized form, New Horizons Truth Or Dare GAME.

I missed this program immensely when I found myself without eyesight for close to eight years, unable to return to my office in Rockville, Maryland -- and -- when, eventually after seven eye surgeries, I was unable to return to my work, no longer a licensed clinician and, consequently, without the abundant following of respectful and appreciative clients I had enjoyed and been rewarded by for a quarter of a century.

Now, however, the New Horizons GAME is back!  

And each and every day, now, since we launched our first GAME event, last September, I am feeling more and more as if I am coming home to my self -- and -- home to a way of living and being with people that more and more truly represents and nurtures who I truly am.

Ushered in by the hunger I was experiencing on the heels of coming out of the close to one year ordeal of my ITAA Ethics Complaint ordeal that had been, in my opinion, so lacking in the transparency, honesty, cooperation and accountability I had come to rely on in the days of “old” New Horizons and its powerfully transforming GAME community, pre-blindness (1973 – 1998).  

At that point the only thing I thought that might assuage the emotional burdens I had accrued during my Ethics Complaint ordeal would be to reestablish a new monthly GAME event, new GAME support groups, once again, wide spread GAME participation and GAME Master training, now set to begin Fall, 2019.

So it came to be that at “new” New Horizons we are doing it! 

Beginning to live out my dream, with win-win for all who join with us!

We hope, in time, that will include YOU!

This is the New Horizons project, program and MOVEMENT we believe is here to stay!

That I could hold the vision, for twenty, long, arduous years, for the return of New Horizons most famous, even infamous, Truth Or Dare GAME (formerly the Discount Derby) – and make it come true?

Imagine that! After twenty long years! 

A miracle!

Question: Why twenty years?

Answer: Because I was blind for eight years and took another twelve to come back to full speed. Meanwhile, no one else could be our GAME Conductor!

But here it is now!  Just in time for New Horizons to throw its hat in the ring to help deal with our national chaos!

Question: And, why is it infamous?

Answer: Because New Horizons Truth Or Dare GAME (formerly the Discount Derby) has not only transformed hundreds, if not thousands of lives, but has also saved a good number of them, with its unique capacity for digging into the Dark Side and turning it upside down. (That's what Titans do!) Then right side up into the Light.

Note on "Elites" (in progress): New Horizons takes its usage of the word "elite," referencing our core GAME community, from the terminology of Murat Yagan, Abkhazian Elder (deceased), who served as New Horizons Community Development Mentor until his passing in 2013.

Murat's definition of an "elite" is as follows: "An attained Human who has reached the highest manifestation of his/her faculties in wholeness."

With this definition, in mind, we attribute "Elites (in progress) to our core GAME community members who make up the majority of the New Horizons Board of Directors -- and -- who have also been involved with New Horizons, some now going on thirty years.

Anastasia, New Horizons Executive Director and Founder, discusses discovering a new freedom, beyond "Breaking The (#MeToo) Silence And The Price It Exacts," earned by telling her truth in spite of the relentless dismissal of it by others.

This is the kind of role modeling the New Horizons Board Of Directors is urging and, personally, modeling through the skill development and support of our "new" Truth Or Dare GAME.

Out of a horrendous #MeToo-based experience, in 2018, involving the Ethics Committee of the International Transactional Analysis Association, ANASTASIA CAME OUT A WINNER, WHICH IS WHAT SHE WAS ALWAYS AFTER MOST, in spite of the obstructions encountered!!.

Never doubt that "truth-telling"
is anything but  heavy lifting.

With a very specific INTENTIONAL approach that Anastasia, ME, teaches through her Exploring Your Dark Side: The Adventure Of A Lifetime methodology, applied to herself, entailing confronting the Dark Side of oneself as well as its presence in others, to see her through the obstacles she encountered, Anastasia came through them greatly changed in ways she is still attempting to put into words. 

(Nancy Pelosi is INTENTIONAL. She demonstrates the benefits of this in her adeptness and in her steadfastness in confronting the Dark Side in Donald Trump. 

The key, as I see it, is in her knowing how to be systematic and diplomatic in her dealings with Trump's Dark Side, without being either overly aggressive or, conversely, too passive. 

From my perspective this comes of Pelosi knowing where she is going in these deailings because she knows how the Dark Side operates in self and others, a true gift. You, too, can learn to be effective in this way, if it appeals to you. If it does, I, Anastasia, am here to teach, guide and support your endeavors.)

Anastasia made a fully legitimate, well-documented Ethics Complaint for sexual harassment and abuse of power by her psychiatrist mentor, Martin G. Groder, M.D. The price exacted of her in breaking a #MeToo-related silence, pitted her against the manipulations and power abuses of the Ethics Committee of the International Transactional Analysis Association.

Beginning, informally, in December, 2017, continuing up until almost one year later, after enduring continuous dismissals from that organization, a mental health-oriented organization in which her membership dated back to 1973, Anastasia came to realize that there had been an enormous price paid for breaking the silence of a #MeToo-type series of encounters she had buried for more than twenty-five years.  

However, with Anastasia’s determination to see her Ethics Complaint appropriately resolved, she found herself willing to pay the price, discovering in the process, even more importantly, how “Truth-Telling Sets Us Free.”

This is role modeling to which it is worthwhile paying attention.

An open letter from New Horizons Founder and Executive Director, Anastasia Rosen-Jones

Dear Readers,

This is a critical time for American citizens and those, beyond our shores, who are impacted by us. 

So here I am this morning, wanting from the deepest place inside of me to tell whomever will listen that, as a survivor of the Watergate era, one of the most important things I learned, as one of my many lessons from Watergate, is that now, more than ever -- 

“American citizens must turn to their neighbors and co-workers, family and friends with the intention of building bridges to overcome whatever separates.

At times like this we desperately need one another and the unity among citizens, especially in times of turmoil, for which our country has generally stood.”

Richard Nixon, as our president, did not drive a wedge, between neighbors, friends or family, or at least not a very big one. And not for very long. It was a different time and different game rules seem to have interrupted his time of coercion. 

Yet, as American citizens, those of us who lived through Watergate became increasingly aware, through the ordeal of it, how lying and corruption can harm our country. Among other things, lying and corruption can separate us. And, both independently and together, they interfere with necessary problem solving on many fronts.

For example, how can we truly solve our immigration problems, without being reliably fact-based?

Yet, can there be times when, at least the lying part of this pair, might be the better way?

We will look at the many facets of this issue in the future. Scholars have been debating the question for ages. But for now, let us simply stick to the social and political aspects, as we are living them out now, in our country.

I don't necessarily believe that our current president is the reason for the rampant alienation, from one another, running, presently, throughout our country. 

However lies, the obstructing of truth being uncovered and reality dealt with, no matter who interferes with it, whatever it is, do keep us apart. 

So here it is!  

The United States of America is possibly less united now than at any other time since the Civil War of the 1850s.  

In fact, in some ways we are in the midst of a civil war right now!

This is why, at this time, it is imperative that we take the initiative to put the lessons to good use that have been learned from the Watergate era, especially the cost to us all of lying and corruption in government.  

Among these lessons is that while lying and corruption do not work well in relationships, as a rule, they can wreak total and complete havoc on an entire country, such as is happening now, when embedded in the very nature of an administration.

Carl Bernstein, the seasoned journalist, who was one of the team of Woodward and Bernstein, uncovering the sordid details of Watergate, tells us to "follow the money" to get to the core of the crises we are facing, now, under the current administration.

Instinctively, many of today’s journalists, being of the media field and having been schooled by Woodward and Bernstein, directly or otherwise, also know to look for the lies and relentlessly keep exposing them. 

This is what journalists -- and -- investigators such as Robert Mueller can and are doing.

What needs to be done, now, however, is not something we should solely rely on these people to shoulder. 

You, too, can help the effort to re-stabilize our country by taking up the task of “being” – and – therefore, also role modeling, and doing everything you can to bring truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth into your daily lives, beginning right now! 

If this is already an active, day-by-day conscious principle of yours, do it even more than before by looking for additional opportunities to bring honest dialogue into your life in areas where you might not have done so previously.

This is something you can do, with no outlay of money that, in the long run, will help us all.  All you need to accomplish this is just, simply, yourself -- and -- your own best intentions to be the peace you desire.

This will help you begin to offset the craziness enveloping the American people, the "hysteria" Bob Woodward has been speaking of, the hysteria gripping many in this chaotic, frightening era we are now living through. 

(If how great results can come of this simple, direct effort, truth telling, is not yet clear to you and it may not be, I will bring you more and more details to make my point in days to come.)

For example, after the presidential election of 2016, I began making a deliberate effort to reach out to people who I thought might have voted differently from myself, an Independent, and inquire of them how they decided on their voting choices.

At first some people seemed to resist my query, being a bit defensive. But after I persisted and showed sincerity and good faith in trying to learn what was important to them, it was amazing how many people opened up and shared things with me they acknowledged having been fearful to share before.

This is not quite the same as breaking through the barriers created by out and out deceptions. However it does illustrate what bridge building looks like which is an important part of what we need to be after establishing.

Consider, again, the messages of Gandhi and Ben Franklin and Jesus I recently reminded readers about several days ago. Then, reflect on where you think lying and truthfulness fit into their words of wisdom, if they are not yet self-evident.

Gandhi stated -- 

“We do best to begin by carving out territories or zones of peace in our personal relations where violence and deceit won’t be used.”

Benjamin Franklin stressed -- 

"We must all hang together or most assuredly we will all hang separately"?

And in the Bible, in the Gospel of Mark 3:25, Jesus states --

"And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand." 

These values, incorporating integrity and truth telling, are ideals that people everywhere generally strive to uphold, as they are fundamental aspects of community, unity and peace.

Why not now?

Have you ever heard the philosophy that “The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth will set you free?”  

Does this not make sense to you, even moderately?

Learn to live this TRUTH, with increasing commitment and involvement, every day, in both small and large ways. 

Truth, deepest truths, spoken to others open up dialogue and conversations that help YOU build resilience in yourself and strengthens bonds with others, a crucial element for getting through these tough times. 

I am doing more of my own truth-telling, in refined ways, since I began, in September, to revitalize New Horizons Truth Or Dare GAME. When I took up that project, in September, I was incredibly stressed.

I had found myself feeling inordinately mistreated by the lack of truthfulness and accountability I had experienced from some of the members of the ITAA (International Transactional Analysis Association), especially their Ethics Committee (EC), in their handling of the Ethics Complaint I had made.

At the worst points in this ordeal, I was actually hungering, almost to the point of feeling as if I were starving, to be back in a space, with people I knew I could count on to hold similar values and corresponding practices, regarding truthfulness, as myself.

New Horizons Truth Squad was it!

I believed I was strong in the area of being consciously truthful before, but I am even more so now. 

I pride myself on my transparency, but there is always room to improve! 

Now, because I am getting regular practice, as I had been doing at an earlier time (1976 -- 2oo2), in doing this with others, New Horizons Truth Squad Members, who are similarly committed to absolute truth telling in compassionate, diplomatic ways, I am speaking with more specifics than I might be otherwise.

I am slowing down with my communicating, too. And, in ways that are feeling particularly good, I am sharing extra bits and pieces of information about me, these days. I had been holding back things, for no particular reason. Now I am more forthcoming. 

If you read my Anastasia The Storyteller blogs you might even notice subtle differences in my blog writings since the New Year. That is when I began to notice the changes in me. Now, in retrospect I can see the beginnings of this change, going back to September when we played New Horizons first “new” Truth Or Dare GAME.

Even the best of us can get a bit sloppy, these days, with our truth-telling of the whole truth and nothing but the truth communications. Especially when so many demands pull at us, prompt us to shortcut what we say, sometimes we can cross a line in to non-truths.

Remember the time you told a co-worker or friend, “I was just going to return your call,” when in actuality you had forgotten all about that call from him/her?

Did you realize, then, that you were actually telling a lie?

A vision of mine that I have been speaking of more and more, recently, is my prophecy, however it can be accounted for. 

It has guided my life to this moment where I am energetically, along with the New Horizons Board Of Directors, intent on creating an active Truth-telling Movement. So here I am now, coming forth from something that is a dream of mine. 

You, too, possibly have dreams of improving the world in which you live. Truth and integrity are likely a part of those dreams.

Anne Frank spoke of that yearning when she stated – 

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait another moment before starting to improve the world

Truth-telling, enhanced in small and large ways can help raise your daily living up a notch to better help the world improve. It is truly doing that to my life. 

I’ve been at it, consciously, as well as making a point to teach it, in refined ways, for over forty-five years. Thus I know, for sure, that I need this as a part of my best living! 

You need truth telling, too, as a part of your regular diet, so as not to allow the craziness enveloping us to pull you down into its SWAMP. The SWAMP is dirty and crazy making.

Truth and clarity, conversely, ground us in reality, the place from which we are most likely to create and sustain healthy living.

How New Horizons Truth Or Dare GAME Helps Us Offset Chaos And Strengthens Our Small "Zone Of Peace"

I'm about to take you, with a series of several articles to describe it, into the secret/sacred portals of our last Truth Or Dare GAME, GAME #5, with a tour of my day in that GAME.

Saturday, January 19, 10 a.m., Truth Or Dare GAME #5, 1:00 p.m.

I wake up this morning as bereft as I've ever been. 

My Beloved cat, Cassandra, has been put to sleep and I am in the throes of trauma and grief.

Still, it is only hours before New Horizons’ fifth monthly Truth Or Dare GAME is scheduled to begin.  

And, no matter what, I am going to not only show-up for the GAME but conduct it from start to finish. 

As it stands, my healing and emotional well-being are tied to being in that process, with my other devoted board members, especially today.

Furthermore, I am the only one that can take on the "Conductor’s role," formerly titled GAME Master in the old days of Marty Groder being the ultimate conductor.

To add to the misery I am feeling, the weather outside is bitter cold and we are soon to be heading into a predicted ice storm with temperatures in the single digits for days ahead. 

Today I feel almost nothing but cold, in and around me.

I am bone tired from relentlessly holding Cassandra in my arms for the past several days,  knowing, painfully, that soon I must let her go. I had clutched her as close to my heart as I could, as she lay dying throughout the just passed days and nights. 

Realizing I was helpless to do anything more for her than had already been done, now, with her gone, I can barely think straight, my heart breaking for my dear kitty who had, in the past year, become the light of my life.

Of one thing I am certain, though, having safely delivered her to face her final moments the day prior, New Horizons Truth Or Dare GAME is now but hours away. And, without doubt, I will show up for it and take my place as GAME Conductor, no matter the emotional upheaval I am undergoing and the ordeal having just passed.

Truth and truth-telling matter that much to me! 

And embracing truth, as a shared value with like-minded others who are willing to place anything and everything of themselves on the line to uphold it, spoken with respect and compassion, matters even more!

Even more so, these days, immersed as our nation has become in chaos and lies

Carrying the sounds of Celine Dion singing “My Heart Will Go On,” with me, every step forward, as a reliable way to unleash my grief, connecting it to hers in losing her beloved husband, I make my way down to my wood burning stove, stoking its embers into the blazing fire I need, now, to warm my household. 

Then I make a cup of steamy chai tea and try to prepare for what lies ahead.

By GAME time, I have managed to, barely, direct myself to the business of it looming ahead.

Yet I have written up our GAME agenda, stoked the fire enough so it will last the duration and put a bowl of cereal next to my cup of hot chai tea, by my side, for the GAME’s length which will only be a mere three hours.

This makes GAME #5 actually a mini-GAME.  Traditional GAMES run the course of an entire weekend – Friday evening to Sunday midday at our retreat center. 

We, the New Horizons Board of Directors and myself, the present elite team of Truth Or Dare players, and myself are on our way to that beauty but still must hold this off for a time, as we refine our GAME playing skills and prepare our Harpers Ferry Retreat Center to re-open for guests. 

So, dialing into New Horizons’ conference call set up, for this GAME event, I am ready to begin on my end.

It is 1:00 p.m.:

Our designated starting time has come and we are all set to go – in this new way we’ve devised, via conference call, allowing us to play our game, in good or bad weather, in health or in sickness and coast-to-coast, as we will be doing on this particular day.

Our first step, after being assured all who will be present are accounted for, is a brief check-in by individual Truth Squad members, some who have been playing New Horizons GAME for close to thirty years already. 

Of course, the passing of kitty is uppermost in my heart and mind.

OMG, I've  made it!

I, too, am fully present, in spite of everything, and we are set to go forward into this sanest, in my experience, of community-development processes – New Horizons Truth Or Dare GAME! 

Apparently, as I have, over the past few days, been keeping the Truth Squad Community informed of the life-death challenges being faced at my house – and – earlier, on this particular day, letting them know Cassandra is gone, my loyal and loving community members have the compassion and kindness to avoid pressing me for details.

Now I am setting GAME #5 into motion! 

1:15: Following a few preliminary housekeeping announcements for the day.

Now I'm asking for a round of personal goal setting for this GAME, from each person present, again my Truth Squad Members are lovingly giving me space to share what I might, when I am ready, allowing me, also, to regain my emotional strength by doing what I believe I do best – 

-- conduct New Horizons Truth Or Dare GAME, that which I hungered most to do, other than write and publish while I was blind.

Taking a few minutes for myself, after the others check-in and identify personal goals for today's GAME, I acknowledge my distress about my kitty, book-ending that sharing with other items on my mind for GAME community discussion, including plans to begin bringing in new Truth Squad Members, beginning next month.

Also I am intent on my setting the stage to guide the Truth Squad in taking up the necessary processes of a not-yet-resolved community incident, from GAME #4.  Once we are able to totally immerse ourselves in this endeavor, the power and profound structures and skill development that will be employed in this will become a genuine turning point in our newly revitalized GAME Community.

What we will deal with, when the time is right, is that a Truth Squad member abruptly left GAME #4 in a volatile, abusive, Trump-like temper tantrum manner, after it being brought to his attention that he had handled himself most inappropriately for a whole series of rule breaking and earlier abusiveness, prior to this GAME. 

In our efforts to manage this contentious situation, well, when we are ready to tackle it, the words of Gandhi that serve as the mantra of our Small "Zones of Peace" initiative will come alive with meaning,  more so than at any other time --

We do best to begin by carving out territories or zones of peace in our personal relations where violence and deceit won't be used."

Thankfully, as our GAME now progresses , no one presses me for more about Cassandra, for which I am grateful.
