Community Rules

"Right relationship" individually and collectively is our objective here, suggests long-time NH/ZOP Board member Sue deVeer, borrowing from her Quaker upbringing. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Make Violence Obsolete! Begin by doing away with “subtle violence” (microaggressions).

New Horizons/Small "Zones Of Peace" Community (NH/ZOP) Rules (circa 1980???)

New Horizons "no abuse rule,"  is the GAME changer that made us famous/infamous. Read the story of the rule's irony here. Scroll down to read in detail.

No Violence

No Threats Of Violence

No Chemical Intoxication (on our premises and/or while attending any of our programs or as a habitual practice)

No Secrets Or Collusions

No Sexual Interacting Between New Horizons Participants --
  • Unless established prior to NHC participation;
  • Except with consent of director
The rule below is the GAME changer rule that has made the New Horizons Exceptional Community approach famous, if not infamous!

No Emotional/Psychological Abuse of New Horizons Participants or Staff (There is no excuse for abuse, even the subtle kind!)

(i.e. “subtle violence” = emotional abuse/discounting that evokes pain.
  • If anyone informs you that they “feel abused” (“discounted" or even "feel unduly distressed" with your behavior might = subtle violence” -- and maybe not. However, the basic meaning is that we must stop what we are doing – and –
  • Discover what is going on that “feels abusive,” “discounting” or painful to the other person;
  • Discover what you, me or we could do instead of the behavior that has been identified as “feeling abusive,” “discounting” or distressing.
We are careful, also, to not allow people to "game" this system.

Question: What's your guess as to how and why New Horizons "no abuse" rule has had such impact as to make it a GAME changer?

Answer: Because in our GAME, we honor the subjective emotions of participants, without judgement (unless we discover, as we sometimes do, that a person is using their emotions as a form of what we call "racketeering)."

No one need prove whether or not a certain behavior etc. is, in fact, factually abuse, by any given outside standards

All that is necessary is for a person to identify that they are "feeling" abused, unsafe, discounted, scared etc., in our GAME, to warrant an exploration on the part of those present to ensure that comfort and safety for all, is maintained.

Conclusion: Don't you wish the whole world could act on this principle/practice?

Make Violence Obsolete Now!

Subtle violence isn’t subtle when you are the target!
