Almost Daily Pandemic Support Groups Are Great, But They Ain’t Always Easy!

This, the pandemic, the quarantine, coping with it all, is hard! 

This other, New Horizons/Small “Zones of Peace’ (NH/ZOP) GAME Support Group, in the midst of the hard, is good.

We know we are in a period, like no other, and that hanging together -- those of us that presently make up the “elite” Truth Or Dare GAME community, the board members of our organization -- will be able, provided we stay healthy, to help bring one another through this horrific crisis – and even beyond into transformation, the pandemic crisis also being the fertile soil for our personal and collective growth.

Through the infrastructures, we have built into our organization, over many years, we know we have the wherewithal to do this – and – are pledged to do it, even when it’s challenging and hard.

How could it be otherwise than difficult in this time of the coronavirus?

So here we are, nearing one month into our almost daily GAME Support Group, created first to care for ourselves, during this time of the coronavirus pandemic.  Next, as service, to pass on our extraordinary collection of powerful strategies on surviving well and how to apply them in the “….U.S.A., Circa 2016 Fwd,” individually and collectively.

However, we are not intent on supporting one another in only surviving. We hope and pray we will come through this pandemic ordeal healthy, our lives intact.

So we are after the creating of a space that helps each and every one of us go up a notch or two, beyond mere survival, in the evolving of our humanity through this pandemic event, a time and place that can help to empower us to thrive, to transform – to even reach awe.

As a program model we’ve always been on a trajectory that elevates, a transforming path that the human mind is uniquely equipped to pursue, if there was ever one!

What a mess!

While almost everything outside and around us is tense, strange and threatening, we’ve pledged ourselves to creating, in the special time we share, set aside almost daily now for our support group, a comforting port of peace. 

Most of the time it is that. 

Yet, we have surfaced a few internal tensions during this time of difficulty, as well, in this support group/community of ours that is an expansion of our Truth Or Dare GAME project.

After all, some of us have been together for close to thirty years. 

How not to surface occasional, unresolved, old stuff between and among loved ones, at a time like this, with daily pressures so closely tied to mortality, pressing in on us, often with potential deadly consequences? 

How not to lose it on occasion at times like this?

That's quite a question!

Still, having tensions and conflict among ourselves has been HARD, rare that it is!

However, we move through them, relatively quickly and smoothly, give or take, almost with the grace of Olympic skating partners. 

After all we have been practicing our beautiful processes, many originating in our GAME, personally and, collectively, as an “exceptional community,” building together for a long, long time.

Clearly, more and more each day, it is apparent that our GAME Support Group is becoming a sustaining base for each of us during this troubled time. 

From this source we draw strength, increase the clarity of our thinking, find release from the daily pressures of the coronavirus quarantining – and – come up with added resources to share for coping with this devastatingly historic time, intent on passing on what we know.

Sharing our stresses, concerns and fears with one another, along with the things we are able to achieve on lock-down, buried wounds, past and present, reach out to the sunlight that is the warmth of one another’s presence through each one’s voice (I/we are not yet comfortable with skype and zoom yet), coming through from places not so near, but close in spirit, a source from which we draw strength and comfort, as well as how to tips on things like “And, what are YOU doing about groceries – and prescriptions? And exercise? 

As George Conway, renegade husband of Kellyanne Conway, aid to Donald Trump, was quoted as stating in the Washington Post, 

 “We are in a transcendent and transformative period in American history.’

The New Horizons/Small “Zones Of Peace” Project is in it, transcending and transforming, full speed ahead!

Truly, we are, indeed, on a best, possible path in a time of greatest distress. We hope you will be wanting to join us in this journey of a lifetime.

Through Our New Pandemic Support Network, Our Board Members/Elite Truth Or Dare GAME Members Are Now Refocusing Priorities: First For Ourselves, Next For Those We Can Support And Guide

Who would’ve, could’ve imagined that -- the revitalizing I initiated of the “old” New Horizons Discount Derby, updated into the new Truth Or Dare GAME, as a perk for my board members – and – a major support for me, as my horrendous “MeToo” ethics complaint regarding my former psychiatrist mentor, Marty Groder, was winding down – would turn out to be the very basis for how and what New Horizons/Small “Zones of Peace” can now provide to help us, the board, get through this coronavirus pandemic, “G-d willing and the creek don’t rise,” as well as strengthen and empower us to help others too. 

I am hard-pressed to articulate – even to them, my board members, to myself and to  readers what is transpiring with this new initiative of ours – the forthcoming New Horizons/Small “Zones Of Peace GAME Support Network in terms of the Divine orderliness I see unfolding here, in this time of greatest nationwide crisis and what we are growing, each and every day our support group meets, carrying itself over to the times in between.

But something big is brewing! 

Maybe that something BIG is what is going to get some of us through this pandemic alive, much like my Mom (stepmother) survived the Holocaust, in a Chinese refugee camp, along with other fleeing German Jews.

Maybe that’s how it goes “When two or more are gathered…” We become something bigger than ourselves, so proportionally big that the ripples outward make a difference.

Sue says that what accounts for the magic, the seeds of which were planted in the Fall, 2018 as the ordeal of my ethics complaint with the International Transactional Analysis Association (ITAA), regarding Marty Groder was culminating – is, in part, the result of our slowing down, with ourselves -- and – with one another, collectively exchanging the urgency of our normal daily lives for the human generosity our GAME Support Group affords, so that we offer one another, through our giving time and attention to one another and whatever is important to each in this time of crises, beautiful gifts, simply from our being – and being together.

I think this is one part of the “so big I can’t wrap my mind around it.”

But there is more.

Today Terry said that what she likes best is simply  ---THIS!

The rest of us knew exactly what she meant, uttering "metoo," with new meaning, whether out loud or inside ourselves.

Pandemic Survivors Support Group Developing Nationwide Network: 10 Days In

Today marks the tenth day since I knew with every cell of my being, for my absolute truth, that the next appropriate steps for the New Horizons/Small “Zones Of Peace” Network and ME just had to be – the developing of a nationwide support group network to help our citizens (and ourselves) brave the coronavirus pandemic.  

The next day, March 20, we held our first conference call GAME Support Group. It was wonderful, a safe port in a ferocious storm.

Since then we've had a group meeting almost everyday -- and -- we are so grateful for it!

Now with ten days in, what have we gained?

If, merely lightening the emotional load people are now carrying is a start, we've already accomplished something. 

"Something big or something small," you ask?

And I say that "Big and small seem to be occurring together, the synchronicity, sometimes awesome, more often received with a deep and quiet gratitude from our just being together with one another, with compassion and caring. 

Here "metoo" means something like I'm concerned about the number of confirmed cases of the virus and the deaths from it, in my state.

Other times our awareness of the the synchronicity opens up appreciation for technology that is enabling us to hear one another's voices in this quasi-group setting we are now creating

All week long I've been trying to write to tell you, readers, what is going on with us, the New Horizons/Small "Zones of Peace" Board Members, behind the scenes, as we establish, for our own benefit, and organize for others our new nationwide GAME Support Group initiative and as one, something, we can do to bolster one another up during these trying times. 

(FYI. I developed and ran a city-wide support network in the Washington, D.C. area, beginning in the early '80s through 1998 when I lost my eyesight, making me one of the most experienced consultants around to guide and mentor a project of this type, especially under the circumstances prompting it -- the virus pandemic. 

Yippee!!! I am so grateful to have this to offer in service!)

Of course, we are going to invite all of you to join us, as quickly as possible but it is going to take us a bit of start up time though we are on it! 

First things first, however. Right now we are going slowly, inviting new members in, very selectively and one-on-one so as to build a firm foundation, as we learn how to update a formerly person-to-person support group model and make it applicable for what we have now in front of us.

The problem with my writing, this past week or so, to share our happenings, is that I am feeling somewhat like Anne Frank wanting to write my own diary of this difficult time from behind my sheltering-in-place, but getting through my writer's block is holding me back.

Too many emotions bottled up are not yet allowing me access to my writer's mind.

So, for now, I'll just stay with the wanting to stay in touch and hope that even these few words of mine might possibly offer inspiration to you out there, striving like me to move through this ordeal on a high road.

Personally, I am doing exceptionally well but not always with ease.

More later to tell you how it is behind my/our closed doors -- and -- also how things are going here as we strive to create our nationwide support group network.

After taking an obligatory and lengthy hiatus (1999 – 2018) due to my losing my eyesight and almost all things New Horizons needing to go on hold, we are so extremely grateful, these days, to be back in action that each GAME day is cause for rejoicing, extra specially.  

Past GAME days (or weekends, as the rule had been back in those days, 1976 -- 1998) had been eagerly anticipated, almost with reverence, most players knowing that whatever pain would be endured would be well worth the gain in the end. Rightfully we expected to be able to reach a collective “awe,” albeit briefly.

Rarely were we disappointed.

(Well, there was that one time when two sex addicts, formerly strangers before our GAME weekend began, hooked up in our retreat center hot tub, the night before the GAME really got going. 

What a mess that was trying to sort out all the dark stuff and regain our truth-telling stability!

But we did come through it, okay because, even with extreme challenges, that is who and what we were helping one another become.) 

Now that we are back in action – and regularly, it seemed appropriate, in January, for us to now start taking stock of how each of has grown and changed since the first of our “new” GAMES, held in September, 2018.

Indeed, we are evolving, each one of us in our own unique way, quite beautifully.  Thanks to our having, once again, created a New Horizons small “zone of peace” sanctuary through our GAME, its principles and processes.

However, each of us is aware that achieving this personal progress, up against the backdrop of the three recent years of chaos in our country, since the new administration took office in January, 2017, has been particularly challenging, as we find ourselves now, like never before, obstructed, not only by our own proclivities, our relationships, personal and professional, and our immediate surroundings but also, like never before in America in peace time, confronted by the many upsets going on in our government, infringing, almost daily, on our peace of mind. 

Like a roller coaster ride, our organization and the people in it have gone round and round, up and down trying to successfully guide the mission of our organization, the creating – and sustaining of small “zones of peace,” a mission inspired by the following words of Mahatma Gandhi, regarding world peace. 

“We do best to begin by carving out territories or zones of peace in our personal relations where violence and deceit won’t be used.” 

Our vision of what it is to be doing well in directing this objective, “thinking globally, acting locally,” has never been an easy one to achieve. After all, if freedom from violence and deceit were easy to come by, wouldn’t most people now have that with ease?

Still, our mission is a tall order under the best of circumstances.

However, in this sea of turbulence, this era of extreme divisiveness, like we have never seen before in America, it has been particularly challenging, as you, no doubt know yourselves. 

That is, if such ideals matter to you, which obviously, as things stand, does not seem to be a goal for everyone.

Nonetheless, we are not the kind of organization to just sit back and be steam-rolled or discouraged when our best laid plans fail to come to fruition, as they have, time and time again, these past three years.

So we are ever more grateful for our GAME days, our small “zone of peace” sanctuary and what we are accomplishing with one another in our very special healing and transforming environment, the GAME, based on truth-telling, truth-listening and our pledges to integrity and loving kindness.

One of our board members who survived the California Carr Fire and much added distress after sent me a text, following Saturday’s GAME, with the following, in spite of all she has been through.

I woke up feeling so beautiful about what we achieved yesterday. I will work to hold that and transform it. 

Her words affirmed for me that New Horizons/Small “Zones of Peace” Truth Or Dare GAME is accomplishing what the world around us is apparently having more trouble with than we are, the members of our “elite” Truth Or Dare GAME.

I offer this report to you, with the hope that you will be inspired by what I am sharing here, in this time of America’s distress. And pretty soon are going to figure out how you, too, can get in the action with us which, by the way, is as close as your phone, if you cannot be with us in person.

Truth Matters:  A New Horizons/Small “Zones of Peace” Discussion Series

Soon to be a New Horizons/Small “Zones Of Peace” Discussion Series, with broadcasts taking up various angles on the subject of truth-telling on Anastasia’s two radio shows: Anastasia The Storyteller Radio and The Possible Society In Motion Radio.

One BIG REASON truth matters is that non-truth telling (i.e. lying or withholding relevant information) from another person is a means of controlling them.

In other words: You have information that is important to someone else. But you hold it back from them. 

Ask yourself why?

Exceptions to the rule are: 

1. A genuine survival necessity precludes truth-telling in a given instance; 

2. Time is somehow of the essence, prompting full truth-telling to be delayed, temporarily, out of genuine necessity.

Is controlling others, even in small ways, how you want your relationships to work?

Think about it.

Of course, we don't know if you know "why" or not, but we do know that the majority of people we have interviewed and worked with, all the way back to the 1980's, numbering in the 1000s, do NOT truly know how to be completely truthful as a daily practice. 

Rather, if they are mindful of truth-telling at all, they tend to be rather careless about it, on a day-to-day basis, half-truths being more the rule of the day.

New Horizons/Small "Zones of Peace" Truth or Dare GAME is, thus, based on our steadfast commitment to truthfulness, our top of the line effort to reverse this habitual pattern, carelessness about full truth-telling, and teach others the art of compassionate truth-listening, a much-needed skill, if high-minded civil discourse is desired.

In this process, full truthfulness is welcomed, praised and honored, even when it's hard or hurts.

But, oh the relief that comes with it!

And, you know what?

The more we do it, in this powerful, life-transforming group process we have evolved over the past 45 plus years, the more we crave full truthfulness -- and -- wish we could share the experience with more and more people.

Make "IT" grow, the expansiveness of living in clear-mindedness and the sharing of genuine, authentic connectedness with like-minded others that rises up where truthfulness is respected.

Oh, so good! So challenging. So clean and refreshing when it's accomplished!

New Horizons Truth Or Dare Movement Goes Public

After weeks of planning and anticipation, New Horizons Support Network, Inc’s Executive Director, Anastasia Rosen-Jones, and long-time Board Member, Sue deVeer found themselves, on Thursday, September 12, at the display table they had been carefully preparing for weeks, set up and ready to welcome potentially interested students attending the Hood College Community Volunteer And Internship Fair.

The fair, specially designed to match students and local non-profit organizations for cooperative service activities, would enable them on this day, to carry out dual intentions: to publicly convey the message of their Truth Or Dare Movement to what they hoped would be enthusiastic attendees of the fair while more privately celebrating what their combined visionary perspectives had been conjuring up for the past six months or so.

Depicting the message they most wanted to convey that something big and bold was happening at New Horizons and all were invited, a display board surrounded by information handouts aided Anastasia and Sue in being able to summarily describe and tell the story of what New Horizons Truth or Dare Movement: Destination Capitol Hill intends and has in store for participants.

First they wanted to invite people to sign their “expanded” Pro-Truth Pledge that would officially engage willing signees to assert a steadfast commitment to making truth-telling an essential part of daily living while concurrently insisting that others do the same or face consequences, especially those in elected leadership positions. 

Next they wanted to announce plans, already in motion, to carry their message by 2021 to Capitol Hill along with a variety of educational seminars focused on exploring questions New Horizons has identified as pertinent such as: Why tell the truth?, When do you tell the truth?, How do you tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?, When is it ok to not tell the truth?.

Finally New Horizons aspires to teach others the art of truth-telling and truth-listening in their signature interactive, personal and community development program, the Truth Or Dare GAME, originally established by New Horizons in Montgomery County in 1976!

Hood College has been identified as the location for New Horizons Truth Or Dare Movement pilot program, intended to be the testing and developing site for a project that plans to expand next year to other campus communities. As New Horizons’ Truth Or Dare Movement gathers student momentum throughout the Washington, D.C. region, organizers are preparing for an advancement on Capitol Hill after next year’s presidential election campaigns have been put to bed with a newly elected or reelected inhabitant of 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue installed.

As it turned out the display board and handouts did what they were intended to do, serving as a mini-presentation for the main aspects of New Horizons ambitious Truth Or Dare Movement. 

Explaining their timely topic, truth telling, became a hot item for discussions by Anastasia and Sue with the fair’s student attendees keeping them on their toes throughout the event as students asked questions and replied with enthusiastic comments of their own thinking. Even students who were not interested in volunteering or interning seemed eager to know more about the scope of the Pro-Truth Pledge and the Movement itself.

An added highlight of the day was the networking that also arose for Anastasia and Sue with representatives of other non-profit organizations, some of whom signed the pledge. And, of course, the hoped for outcome of the Truth Or Dare Movement project was realized for that day attracting some very talented student volunteers and interns who in the week following the fair are already beginning to join with New Horizons to begin creating an on-campus Pro-Truth Pledge signing campaign and a variety of events and seminars now being scheduled for the Fall and Spring semesters.

Mission accomplished! 

The first step of New Horizons Truth Or Dare Movement plan, Hood College as the initial pilot project, has now been launched!

Truth Or Dare Movement: Next Steps 

(And a background story about our Truth Or Dare Movement Poster Girl to help fill in some gaps and make our forthcoming agenda more meaningful, on a human level.)

Anastasia Rosen-Jones (formerly Marcia E. Rosen), New Horizons Executive Director, did not know if she would ever be able to return to Rockville that day in March, 2003 she shut her private practice office door for the last time at 809 Veirs Mill Road. She was heading into eye surgery #7 of the past five years, praying that the legal blindness she had been living with since Labor Day, 1998 would be lifted and gone forever. 

But she had no guarantees. She had, after all, been facing the challenges of threatened blindness from a hereditary eye disease, keratoconus, defined as a cone-shaped deformity of the cornea, since she had been a junior in college.

But now, she is ready to return! 

Not exactly to what had been the Rockville Professional Building, located on Veirs Mill and Norbeck Roads, as the building has been torn down and replaced by townhouses.

But a coming back to many of the things that mattered most to her in the Washington area since she moved here in 1961, the young bride of her high school sweetheart, from whom she was divorced decades ago.

With satellite offices in Bethesda and Frederick and a home office that is part of the New Horizons Harpers Ferry Retreat Center from where she regularly works and lives, Ms. Rosen-Jones, as Executive Director of the New Horizons Support Network, Inc., a non-profit, is at last ready for her return.

And with this re-entry, surprise, surprise -- Anastasia is now setting her “sights’ on a coming back to her even earlier stomping grounds, the heart of Washington and our national political scene. 

This time, however, she will not be heading the U.S. “Male” Service, known to be the “original” executive reminder and gift shopping service, catering to Washington’s elite, nor will she be identified as a Nancy Sinatra look-alike these many decades after her days as a celebrity entrepreneur in Washington.

Instead Anastasia will be leading the way forth to realize a vision she imagined as far back as 1985, taking New Horizons signature program, the Truth Or Dare GAME, originally called the “Discount Derby,” to Capitol Hill with an intent to transform the dark side of it, as completely as she can, using New Horizons tried and true GAME strategies to achieve this.

To accomplish this daring feat, Anastasia is supported by her devoted and energetic New Horizons Board of Directors who are actively behind her in launching the forthcoming New Horizons Truth Or Dare Movement: Destination Capitol Hill and joined by a budding collaboration with the global Pro-Truth Pledge Movement.

New Horizons Support Network, Inc. is a 501 C (3), non-profit organization, offering programs designed to teach community development and violence-prevention skills and strategies through the training and support model of its “Small Zones of Peace” Project initiative.

Now in the process of contributing these organizational strengths to the development of a nationwide Truth Or Dare Movement that presently incorporates: The Truth Or Dare GAME, the online To Lie Or Not To Lie Radio Show series and the Pro-Truth Pledge, Ms. Rosen-Jones is presently leading New Horizons' effort to build a regional network of troops to take on Capitol Hill.
